I have had this lamp for 11 years and am just now replacing the bulb. Mine has always functioned the way I expected and the way that is helpful to me:1) the lamp and sound starts coming on 15 min. before the set alarm time. It begins softly and dimly and increasingly becomes louder and brighter. It has never failed me - I used to dread waking up to a sharp shrill sound or bright light - no longer. I wouldn't be without my Verilux Rise and Shine lamp. I love it because I wake up gradually, not with a start!

4I can wake up in the morning!Oct 04, 2009
Washington State, 90 inches of rain per year, gray skies, SAD. I bought this lamp despite some negative reviews hoping for the best and I'm so glad I did! I have been able to wake up in the morning and not feel like a zombie for the first time in my life. I find the sounds help me not fall back asleep in the morning, yet their gradual increase of volume is not jarring. I did not think I ever had trouble falling asleep, but find the gradual dimming of the light allows me to fall asleep quickly instead of reading too late. Setting the alarms is a bit complicated at first and I was very glad to have read the review about screwing the light bulb in tightly. I had to call the company to ask how to adjust the brightness and they were very helpful, pleasant, and the problem was solved in less than a minute. I highly recommend this lamp for SAD sufferers.

2I like the idea but.....Aug 23, 2009
hmmm, what is my _biggest_ concern with this light/alarm?
I agree with all the other comments I just read (the first page), both positive and negative. I LOVE the idea, the full spectrum light, and the 'all-in-one' appliance.
Before this I had a lamp, a clock radio, and a sound machine; all fitted onto a small antique nightstand.
The radio DOUBLES in volume every time it increases. Not very 'gradual', which is what the description says and is why I paid the high price.
Pushing the light switch to turn it on & off pushes the whole thing back, & off the table, unless I hold the back of the light with my other hand or am very very careful.
The alarm setting on the display is tough to read, with or without glasses.
The light from the display, even dimmed as far as it goes, keeps me awake unless I put something in front of it. You would think with their knowledge of how light helps us to WAKE UP, they might have made it able to be dark during sleep hours.
I would use just the light if I had another alarm to make sure I actually got up. After all, I sleep through sunrise just fine on weekends. ;)
A friend mentioned one with Tibetan bells that gradually increased in volume. That might be nicer.

5I would buy it againApr 20, 2009
One day I accidentally forgot to close my blackout curtains and gently woke up to the rising sun. I bought this and am pleased that it does the same thing and I don't have to worry about sun damage. Also I use it on the lowest amount of light to read before I go to sleep.

2Great While It workedJan 31, 2009
I've owned this for 4 months and loved it until last week. The only thing working on it is the radio and I've only used the radio once in the past! Well, the radio doesn't actually work - it's on. And won't shut off without unplugging it. The light doesn't work, the clock doesn't work, and none of the buttons respond. Thoroughly disgusted with this.
